Triangle Dogs Go for Gold and a Year’s Supply of Dog Treats at the Barley Labs Dog Olympics

Barley Labs Celebrates Six Year Anniversary of Beer Grain Dog Treats

Do you and your dog have what it takes to win gold? We're excited to you and your dogs to compete in the inaugural Barley Labs Dog Olympics during our party to celebrate the 6th anniversary of our dog treats on Saturday, September 22, 2018.

Each dog and human team will compete in a variety of events to win a year’s supply of Barley Labs dog treats* and a $50 Barley Labs gift card. Additionally, each team will pay a $25 registration fee to participate in all events or $6 per individual event – this pot of money will be donated to the Animal Protection Society (APS) of Durham.

"Six years ago, we started Barley Labs as a way to celebrate the love we have for our rescue dog Barley and for craft beer," said Scott Beaudry, co-owner of Barley Labs. “When we opened our taproom earlier this year, we were excited to have a space where we can expand that idea to the community so that they could celebrate their dogs and the brews they love, too. This party and the Dog Olympics was our way not only to commemorate our anniversary but also give back to a local rescue.”

Barley Labs launched its dog treat business in September 2012, making all-natural treats with spent grain from Fullsteam Brewery. Beaudry’s home brewing hobby led him to making the treats for their rescue dog Barley, a Lab mix, and his partner Theresa Chu eventually pushed to turn it into a business.

“It was February 2012, and I came out of a particularly terrible meeting at my corporate job, walked straight back to my desk, pulled out a sticky note, wrote ‘Barley Labs September 2012’ on it, and stuck it to my wall,” said Chu. “I needed a way to take all the negative energy I had and turn it into something positive. Scott, thankfully, was on board. And sure enough, on September 25, 2012, we launched the company.”

The Dog Olympics events will include:

  • Musical Chairs (Dog & Human) – 1:00 p.m.
  • Best Trick (Dog & Human) – 2:00 p.m.

  • Hot Dog Eating Contest (Human only) – 6:30 p.m.
  • Music Bingo (Human only) – 7:30 p.m. (free event)

Each event will be scored and the top team at the end of the day will win the grand prize. Second and third place also will receive dog and beer lover prize packs. Even if you can’t attend the whole day, the first place team for each individual event will win a prize as well.

In addition to the Dog Olympics, other events during the anniversary party include:

  • All Day: $2 from each bag of Barley Labs treats sold donated to Carteret and Craven County animal shelters
  • All Day: Hourly raffle (each person gets 1 free ticket for attending) for a bag of Barley Labs treats
