Durham, N.C.--Two small business owners are opening the first dog-focused bar in Durham, N.C., where people can bring their furry best friends to sit, stay and sip.
Theresa Chu and Scott Beaudry, co-owners of Barley Labs, announced they are expanding their beer-grain dog treat business to include a bar and gift shop located at 4015 University Drive in Durham's BB&T Plaza. Their goal is to open the approximately 1,700 square foot space before the end of the year.
"Five years ago, we started Barley Labs as a way to celebrate two of the things we love most -- dogs and beer," said Chu. "Our dream was always to have a space where we could celebrate these loves in a larger way. Finally, we are able to make that dream a reality."
The new shop will include a bar serving craft beer, indoor and outdoor seating, bottled beer and growler fills for off-site consumption, and retail shelves filled with gifts for dog and beer lovers.
What will make the space dog focused and not just dog friendly? The co-owners say it's all about remembering that everyone who walks in the door is a valuable customer, including those with paws instead of feet.
"From the start, our business has been inspired by the love we have for and our experience with our dogs," said Beaudry. "With this new shop, we aren't just thinking about how to make the humans happy, but we are very focused on how to make the dogs comfortable and happy, too."
Customers (both human and K-9) can expect the following:
- Free dog treat samples for every dog that enters
- Beds and toys for dogs to enjoy in store
- VIP (Very Important Pup) rewards program
- Adoption events with local rescues and shelters
- Craft beers on draft to enjoy on site with a rotating shelter/rescue monthly donation tap; bottled beer and growler fills to take home
- A variety of treats, toys, and accessories for dogs
- Dog and beer themed gifts for humans
- Educational workshops and social/networking events
"We are particularly sensitive to catering to fearful or shy dogs," said Chu. "Our girl Barley has some social challenges, particularly at and around our house; but she's great when she's out and about as long as people are respectful of her space. Our goal with the bar and gift shop is to create an environment where people feel safe bringing their dog. We will try to reinforce good human behavior, such as reminding people to ask before petting and never to pet a working/service dog."
For customers outside of the Durham area, Barley Labs will continue to sell their dog treats online and at retailers across North Carolina.
